The Future
An explosion to the west, casts momentary light upon your face
As evening air endows breath where before there was none
I stand upright, understanding that by sunrise it will be done
And we will be imprisoned at atmospheric depths, so cold and afraid
But you and I will be saved.
Behind us, a fire burns somewhere unseen
Its scorching heat churns around us, while water flows beneath us, heard
Through rocks. Soothing ordinarily but now grating to the nerves
Cracked fingers trembling as crazed spectators look across the grisly scene
In front of us, having made violent what once was pristine.
The look in your eyes, so blue, as if ocean-filled
Pure and true, says you've forgotten our reason for being here
In this season of unease, kept afloat by our sturdy vessel, valiantly steered
Through heavy waves, rough yet somehow still
An expression of fate or free will?
Packing up our belongings, we hear a distant dissonant chord out of tune
Knowing a fight to be fruitless, we submit, yielding to this terrifying future.
